DIY POMPOM WREATH

Is it really the festive season if you havent made a pompom….?

If you’re looking for that fun easy craft that you can do with a glass of wine or with the whole family- then this is the perfect festive make for you! The pompom wreath is an easy make that will pimp up your front door in perfect fluffy style and can be brought back out year after year. Plus it stands the test of time through the wind and the rain, bringing a bit of fun fluffy colour on these grey winter days!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

• Wreath base/frame (You can get the metal base but I LOVE using these £1 Tinsel wreaths from Poundland to work on top of for a bit of sparkle!)

• Mix of Yarns- I have used a mix of DK and Aran yarns from Poundland and Paintbox yarns (available at lovecrochet.com)

• Pompom makers, range of sizes, or use card the old fashioned way

• Scissors

• Large needle

Step 1

Using your yarns fill your pompom makers by wrapping around. Make a mix of styles: for block just use one colour, for half and half do a block colour each side of your pompom maker, for speckled hold and wrap with 2 or more colours at once. Tip: wrapping with 2 colours is faster so use speckled for your larger pompoms!

Step 2

Once your pompom maker is full , clip in both sides and use scissors to cut around the centre.

Step 3

Tie and secure your pompoms. Use a long strand of yarn and double it up so its stronger, always tie your pompoms with a double knot on each side as this is the only thing that keeps them together. Leave your ties with long strands as we will need these later.

Step 4

Trim your pompoms, giving them a hair cut helps them get nice and round and even!

Repeat steps 1- 4 using different size pompom makers till you have  around 30 pompoms. This can be a great group activity, why don’t you make a pompom party out of it!

Step 5

Using the long ends we kept thread them through the wreath and tie to secure at the back. Spread out your colours and sizes to get a nice even mix. Keep adding till you fill your wreath, same 1 larger pompom  and 2 smaller matching ones for the hanging pompoms.

Step 6

Finish off your wreath by adding some pompom tassels. Wrap yarn around your hand or piece of card (A6), and wrap around with 2 strands 15-20 times. Cut at the bottom to make strands. Using a long strand of yarn which is doubled up tie in centre to secure your tassel. Using large needle thread the tassel through the centre of the pompom. Using a small bit of thread bind off the tassel, and then plait the long strands to create the cord for the hanging
